This Emotions for MSN tutorial is for Adobe Photoshop. I will be using Photoshop version 7 for this tutorial however the tutorial should be version independent. In this Photoshop tutorial you will learn howto make your own custom Emotion for MSN smiliy graphic for use with MSN Messenger, however the tutorial maybe adapted for other instant messenging programs. Emotion for MSN Photoshop Tutorial1. Ok, open up photoshop and create a new image. The MSN Emotion image must be 19x19 pixels with a transparent background to start with. MSN Messenger will resize your custom emotion if it is not 19x19 pixels, so it is always best to work to this image size. Lets take a look at how to do this:
![]() 2. You now have you main Emotion for MSN image. Within this space you will create your Emotion for MSN shape color etc. But hold on, its very small! Emotions for MSN are small, it helps MSN Messenger send the emotion file quickly if its small. Zoom into the image using the Zoom tool ( ),
to get the best Emotion for MSN you may want to zoom in enough to see each pixel of the emotion as you make it.
Lets get the shape down now. Select the elipse shape tool ( ) left click and drag out
to create a circle, hold down shift to keep it as a perfect circle.![]() This acts as the main color of the MSN Emotion's smilies face. It doesn't have to be blue, or yellow, its your own custon Emotion for MSN so create it however you like. Remember this Emotion for MSN photoshop tutorial can be used as a guideline to create your own Emotions for MSN. 3. Ok lets add some eyes to our Emotions for MSN. We're going to want add the Emotions for MSN eyes on a photoshop layer so we can change them later for different Emotions for MSN expressions like winking or shocked eyes etc. Even if you dont think you'll be making any other Emotions for MSN its still a good idea to use photoshops layers incase you suddenly have a burning desire to get back into photoshop and kick out some new Emotions for MSN. We're going to use the elipse shape tool ( ) again but with a white color this time. Then on another photoshop layer we're going to add the Emotions for MSN pupils. Let take a detailed
look at how we do all this to our MSN emotion in photoshop 7:
4. The Emotion for MSN is almost complete, all thats left to do is add the mouth. Its exceptionally difficult to create a nice mouth on your Emotion for MSN, depending on how you'd like it to look of course. There are endless techniques and methods for creating the mouth on your MSN emotion but i prefer the following. Create a new photoshop layer and using the elipse shape tool again drag out your solid mouth shape, you can use free transform to squash, stretch, or rotate its shape. Then using photoshop's layer blending options/layer effects you can add outlines or change color etc - this can also be used on other photoshop layers of the MSN emotion too.
5. The final stage of this Emotion for MSN Photoshop tutorial is saving the image. Luckly Photoshop version 7 has a very useful 'Save As for web...' option, using this will save the transprancy into the gif file automatically.
